Question:

About:Left Eye Squint
Dear Dr., I'm 20 years old.Actually my problem is that I'm not able to move my left eye.I believe this is since my birth.Actually,I'm able to move only my right eye and left eye neither moves right nor left.My left eye just looks straight. When I want to see something that is on the side,,I turn my whole head ,,so that I dont get double vision. Infact ,,my left eye does not even looks straight. It is slightly away from straight lookin and the eye ball is positioned a bit towards left side. For example,,when i meet someone face to face,,i.e straight ,I turn my head slightly towards right,so that my both the eyes focus the person. But,,this tilt in my head is noticed only by keen observin. And,,whenever I read or write I tilt my head towards right and it sounds very funny. Dr. I just dont know,,how to explain you more clearly cos first of all my English is not good and secondly explaining through Computer is difficult. Dr. I'm too much worried about my this problem and I'm vexed.Because of this problem of mine,,I feel I can do nothing and lost confident on myself. To be more honest I hve many times felt about suiciding myself. Please provide me a hopeful solution. I infact planning to travel to US regardin this. Its no matter how much would be the expenses I incurr for this but somehow I wanna cure my squint on the left eye. Please send me a quick mail. I'm just waitin for your earliest mail.I once again belive you can understand my problem and provide me a good solution..
Note : when I focus somethin on the extreme right side,my right move right ,,and my left eye moves very slightly, but this doesnt move fully to the right like my right eye.I say this becos I just like to let you kno that there's a very very slight movement in my left eye.I just thought that this might be useful in giving me the solution for curin my squint on left eye
Thankin you yours faithfully,

(Thaha)

Answer:

Dear Thaha,

It is likely that you have Duane's syndrome. It usually occurs in women in the left eye. Usually however, the left eye points slightly inward, not outward. If there is a headposture to enable single vision, surgery can be done, I operate on all four horizontal muscles in theses cases (Kestenbaum operation) but other operations also work well. Please try to get less obsessed with the restricted movement of your left eye; a minor cosmetic defect can be no reason for suicide.

Yours truly,

(Herb Simonsz, MD, PhD)
